In the winter access to Old Faithful Snow Lodge is by over-the-snow vehicles only. You can make reservations for a snow coach by calling 866 GEYSERLAND (866-439-7375). Snowcoaches to Old Faithful depart from Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel, West Yellowstone and Flagg Ranch.

Wintertime offers a completely different experience at Yellowstone, and the two lodges open during the winter season - Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel and Old Faithful Snow Lodge - serve as a perfect home base for taking a snowcoach tour.

Description

Getting into Yellowstone National Park in the winter is an adventure in itself. Xanterra provides round-trip snowcoach transportation to and from Old Faithful. Our snowcoaches are heated and we offer sightseeing stops along the way to catch wildlife, steaming geysers, and stunning views the winter scenic tundra. Snowcoach passengers must check-in at the Xanterra Parks & Resorts Front Desk at least 45 minutes prior to departure for ticketing and loading.

Interpretive Snowcoach Tours from Old Faithful Snow Lodge

Winter Photo Safari - Cold temperatures and thermal activity combine to create fantastic winter images! Our professional guide will be there to help with any  questions about the park or the camera.  Since this tour's focus is photography,  time will spent at the best locations for capturing winter images. Coffee and tea are provided. Those wanting more of a field meal should consider ordering box lunches from our restaurant the night prior to the tour.  

Day trip from Old Faithful to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone - Experience the ice sculpted falls and snowy golden walls of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.    

Firehole Basin Adventure - Spend a few hours in the valley of the Firehole River.  Discover the unique nature of this area, home to steam-enshrouded thermal features and the wildlife who benefit from the thermal influence.

Luggage Restrictions

Each guest entering the park by snowcoach is restricted to two pieces of luggage plus cross-country ski equipment. Hard-sided luggage is advised.

Clothing

Although our snowcoaches are heated, the sightseeing stops along the way from start to finish necessitate warm footwear and clothing.

Insider Tips

  • Whether grabbing an express shuttle to the Old Faithful area or experiencing Yellowstone through one of our interpretive tours, be sure to have your camera handy for wildlife viewing and rare views of various geysers along the way.
  • Snowcoach guides are highly knowledgeable about Yellowstone's history, geology and wildlife, be sure to ask as many questions as you might have along your journey to and from your destination. They also know some of the best places to stop for wildlife and scenic photos.

In addition to our interpretive snowcoach tours, Xanterra offers daily one-way tours to Old Faithful from West Yellowstone, Montana as well as to and from Flagg Ranch, Wyoming near the Grand Tetons National Park to the Old Faithful area.  We also offer trips to and from the Mammoth Hot Springs area to the Old Faithful area. While the snowcoaches are heated, sightseeing stops, where passengers leave the coach, necessitate warm footwear and warm layered clothing. Express Snowcoach Shuttles

Visitors to Yellowstone National Park in the winter coming to and from West Yellowstone to the Old Faithful area can also take an express snowcoach shuttle. These shuttles provide one rest stop, but are not intended for touring or photo stops.  Guests traveling on the 6:30 a.m. shuttle from Old Faithful will not have an opportunity eat breakfast in the dining room prior to departure. Guests can order box breakfasts from the dining room the night before, and complimentary coffee is available in the hotel lobby beginning at 6:00 a.m.  Visit our Dates of Operation and Rates page for more information.
