Our New Yellowstone Gift Shop Offers Sustainable Shopping
For Future Generations: Yellowstone Gifts is a cutting edge concept in retail stores. In keeping with our commitment to leadership in sustainable business practices, we have developed a gift shop that focuses on environmentally friendly products, interpretive messaging regarding climate change and guest education on the sustainability initiatives in Yellowstone.
Season: Winter,Summer, Intensity: 1, Duration: 1 hours, Location: Mammoth Hot Springs Area
Description
The items in the store are also fun for all! A few notable gifts include a puzzle made from recycled paper that has wildflower seeds embedded in the pieces and when you're done with the puzzle, you can plant it in your garden. There are also gift cards, art prints and tree ornaments made from bison dung. You'll find green jewelry with bamboo gift boxes, t-shirts made from recycled plastic bottles, garments made from recycled cotton, and more!
Green Gifts Can Be Fun
In addition to being a new concept in gift shops, we've also developed a first-of-its-kind Product Sustainability Scorecard. These scorecards provide information on 16 sustainable criteria as they apply to the items in the store. The scorecards give shoppers an opportunity to make choices of Yellowstone gifts based on criteria most important to them. So finding that "perfect" Yellowstone Park memento just became easier, as the many unique and appealing gifts, jewelry, apparel and decorative items also can be selected based on their impact on the environment.
Yellowstone Gift Store Receives Special Award from Retail Industry
The shop itself was designed with an eye toward energy efficiency and use of recycled or sustainably produced materials. As a result, LED lighting, recycled wood fixtures and wood flooring from sustainable forests have been used within the store's interior. Even the interpretive signage is printed on a corrugated cardboard material made from over 60% post consumer waste and is 100% recyclable-a vast improvement over foam core.
The interpretive exhibits range from climate change impacts in the national parks, to consumer tips for greening up at home. One exhibit encourages guests to commit, in writing, to a personal action that will contribute to minimizing climate change in the national parks.
Not only has this gift shop demonstrated to be popular with our guests, the Association for Retail Environments recently recognized For Future Generations: Yellowstone Gifts with a special sustainability award for "Consumer Education and Outreach." We have to say we're very proud of the acknowledgement!
Climate change challenges the very foundation of the national park system and our ability to leave America's natural and cultural heritage unimpaired for future generations.
