Essential Yellowstone

Experience Yellowstone during two intriguing seasons, spring and autumn. In either season, an Institute guide leads you on explorations to find the hidden secrets and sights of the park. You'll enjoy wildlife watching in the Hayden Valley, walking along the rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River, touring the heart of the Yellowstone volcano, and exploring the geysers of Yellowstone. The program is based at Old Faithful and comfortable accommodations are provided at Old Faithful Snow Lodge. Your program fee includes dinner the last night.

Spring Wolf and Bear Discovery


This is your opportunity to delve into the world of Yellowstone's wolves and bears.  You'll join an Institute naturalist guide for sunrise trips in Yellowstone's Northern Range to look for these charismatic carnivores.  During the day, you'll take leisurely hikes in their habitat, learning about their behavior, ecology, and conservation.  Throughout, you'll be immersed in the beauty and wonders of Yellowstone in the spring.  Your program fee includes dinner the last night.

Trails through Yellowstone

Lace up your hiking boots and sling on your daypack for four days of hiking, wildlife viewing, and discovery in the world's first national park.  You'll be led by an Institute naturalist guide on carefully chosen hikes to explore Yellowstone's diverse landscapes throughout the park, from the geyser basins around Old Faithful to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River.  Search for elk, bison, grizzly bears, wolves and other species on a sunrise wildlife viewing expedition.  a variety of new and exciting trails have been added to the itinerary this year so be prepared to hike every day in this active program.

Yellowstone for Families

Experience the magic of Yellowstone with this unique learning adventure for families with children 8-12 years old.  Led by an Institute naturalist guide, your family can explore canyons, waterfalls, geyser basins and enjoy activities together including animal tracking, wildlife watching, photography, painting, and hiking.  During the program you children can become Yellowstone National Park Junior Rangers. 

Mammoth Hot Springs

Old Times on the Grand Tour

Take the famous and historic Grand Tour of Yellowstone in the same high style as visitors of a bygone era.  You'll travel with an Institute naturalist guide in one of the park's classic yellow buses, which features large windows and a retractable canvas top perfect for wildlife viewing.  Your guide will escort you to cultural sites from Yellowstone's past and on walking tours of historic and thermal areas.  Enjoy the spontaneity of a Yellowstone tour, too, by stopping when wildlife watching opportunities arise.  To complete each day of history and sightseeing, you'll stay overnight in three historic areas--Mammoth, Old Faithful, and Lake.

Fall Wolf and Elk Discovery

Team up with an Institute wildlife biologist to discover wolves and elk, Yellowstone’s marquee predator and prey species. Autumn is the elk mating season and we will take plenty of time to enjoy and discuss the dramatic displays of mating bulls. Wolves are more elusive in fall but sunrise and sunset wildlife watching trips will still give us a good chance of observing wolves in the wild. Other activities include short hikes in wolf and elk habitat and classroom presentations on the behavior, ecology, and management of both species.

Roosevelt Rendezvous

The historic Roosevelt Lodge sits in the center of Yellowstone's Northern Range where you can enjoy the arresting bugle of bull elk among the fall colors of aspen, willow and cottonwood.  During the day, you can search for wolves, enjoy a series of easy geology strolls in the Yellowstone volcano, challenge yourself on a vigorous guided hike, or do your own thing.  New this year: participants’ input, solicited before the program commences, will be used to select the perfect mix of new and past-favorite field trips for your week.

At night, we convene in the main lodge for buffet-style dinners and entertaining evening programs.  You'll stay in rustic but comfortable individual guest cabins.  Each program has a limit of 52; daily field trips are in small groups.
