Employee Coronavirus Updates

This page updated March 31, 2020 and will be updated as necessary going forward.

All Xanterra Operations in Yellowstone Closed From Friday, March 20 – Thursday, May 21, 2020. We Will Re-Open Friday, May 22, 2020.

Based on current orders from governmental authorities to close restaurants, bars and other venues and to limit events and community gatherings, we have made the difficult decision to suspend our park and hotel operations effective Friday, March 20, 2020. This temporary closure is anticipated to last through May 21, 2020. At this time, we are planning to re-open our park and hotel operations on May 22, 2020.

With that, we’ll be bringing employees back on a timeline, yet to be finalized, that will ensure a smooth and timely opening. Of primary importance will be our ability to offer safe and healthy operations for our staff and guests. Once decisions are made, Human Resources will contact employees by email, text, and/or phone regarding your specific return dates.

This decision was not an easy one and we recognize the significant impact this has on employees, but we know that this is the responsible path forward to help protect our people and our communities and to slow the spread of the disease.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate through this challenge. We look forward to staying connected with you and will provide you with regular updates over the next couple months.

There are no current plans for additional furloughs, though future decisions and actions will be made as circumstances and public health guidelines warrant.

As of March 24th, 2020, Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks were closed to all park visitors until further notice. There is no visitor access permitted to either park. State highways and/or roads that transcend park/state boundaries and facilities that support life safety and commerce will remain open. Employees will still be able to access the park.

The Mammoth post office and Medcor clinic in Mammoth will remain open.

The employee recreation center and general store are currently closed until further notice.

Xanterra is following the guidance of local partners including the National Park Service, public health offices of Wyoming and Montana, and our corporate office. If travel restrictions that apply to our employee residents are implemented by any of these agencies, we will comply and inform our staff. Ultimately, each employee is responsible for understanding the personal and potential community impacts of any of their actions including travel decisions and for taking necessary precautions. (A link to CDC travel guidelines is included in the Resources section of this webpage.)

There are certainly online options for virtual social gatherings and entertainment.  While the recreation hall is closed, employees are allowed to exercise outside, walking or biking within the village where they live. (Don’t forget the bear spray.) Backcountry use is prohibited and open interior roads are for administrative travel only. Regardless of the activity, employees should always adhere to social distancing,  cleanliness/sanitation guidelines, and other best practices outlined by the CDC and health department.

Information and updates are being provided to employees via email, Xpress and this webpage. As noted previously, employees are ultimately responsible for their own actions and should regularly check this webpage for updates. (A link to CDC guidelines is included in the Resources section of this webpage.)

Our plan is to continue to follow the guidance of the public health agencies responsible for the tracking, treatment, and management of COVID-19.  To prepare for this event our leadership team has been working on a management plan that addresses a variety of concerns including quarantining, feeding, and communicating with employees.

We have paused hiring for summer 2020. Thank you for your interest in Yellowstone jobs, and we look forward to discussing job opportunities soon!

Resources

The following resources are provided so our employees can stay informed:

Choose Kindness

We may need to distance ourselves, but that doesn’t mean we can’t help each other. During difficult times, we often see the most beautiful acts of kindness. There’s an old Mr. Roger’s quote, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping”.  In the past couple of weeks, if we look, we can find stories of courage, compassion, and kindness.

If you’re home and looking for things to do to keep busy, visit the list of resources provided by the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation. We will get through this sooner if we take care of ourselves and each other (without risking contagion). Kindness is a powerful tool. Let’s use it.
