Picture Perfect Photo Safari

Morning Tour

From early morning bison and elk whose breath condenses on the cool air, to the sun shining through the vapor clouds above thermal streams, to the rainbow only visible for a few minutes each day, and only from a single vantage point, in the mist of the Lower Falls of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Yellowstone National Park is a paradise for shutterbugs. Your host, a driver-guide who is also a professional photographer, will tailor the tour to the interests, skill levels, and equipment of the group to create a day of memorable photographs for all.

One of our safaris originates from Old Faithful Inn, and takes in thermal areas and wildlife north of Old Faithful Village; the other departs Lake Yellowstone Hotel to visit wildlife-rich Hayden Valley, north shore of Lake Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. For both, the goal of this five-hour tour is intriguing photographic opportunities coupled with (for those who’d like it) instruction on how to better use your camera means a limited number of in-depth stops will be the order of the day. Great tours!

Sep 03, 2016 by Magdalena Johansson

I took two photo tours (one from Lake hotel, one from Old Faithful Inn). My guides were Doug (Lake area) and Betty (Old Faithful area). These tours were the best part of my trip to Yellowstone! The guides were very helpful and made everyone in the group feel comfortable regardless of whether they used their smartphone or a SLR camera. At both tours, we photographed wildlife, though the Lake area tour had more of a wildlife profile and the Old Faithful area tour had (naturally) a more geothermal-area profile. The guides knew exactly at what time to be in which spot to get the best lighting and they shared their knowledge about filters, composition and used a language that even a beginner photographer could understand. The tours were well worth their price as the group was small (about 10 persons) and the guide had time for everyone. Bravo!

I did 2 photo safari's in the 1937 yellow buses. Both guides were the most amazing guides ever. they knew photography at many levels, everyone left with great photos, they were excited about peoples photos, they offered ideas on locations and different techniques for great photos. My guides were Doug Hilborn and Ron Franklin. Compared to others in the group I was fairly advanced, yet they still both challenged me to do different techniques and get me out of my comfort zone. I am a much better photographer because of both of them and I took home some amazing shots. They were the highlight of my trip. They were very professional, knowledgeable and helpful. I want to come back as a Yellowstone photo tour guide.

My husband and I took the morning tour that left from Lake Hotel. Our guide was Rod, and he did a perfect job guiding us on this tour. He knew just where to take us for beautiful sunrise photography, and to find wild animals. He was incredibly knowledgable about the park from the history, to all of the animals. We had a mix of people at all different photography levels and camera equipment, but Rod had photography tips for even the most experienced, to the cell phone level guests. Take this tour at the beginning of your stay, so you'll have the knowledge the guide shares with you about the park for the rest of your visit. I highly recommend this tour.
