We combined 2 unique programs included in this package and are thrilled to offer nighttime stargazing and morning wildlife tours. The new Stargazing Program includes a new partnership with Yellowstone Safari Company’s Lead Astronomer, Alex Trunnell, and high-powered telescopes to interpret the gorgeous night skies of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. You will see some of the darkest corners of Yellowstone, and will be treated to unparalleled views of stars, planets, galaxies, nebulae, clusters, the Milky Way, and more. Our own Certified Interpretive Guides will provide an amazing morning wildlife experience spotting and watching Yellowstone’s iconic fauna that potentially include bison, elk, pronghorn, osprey, eagles, black bears, grizzly bears, and wolves – who knows what you’ll see in the fall (it’s the secret season…shhh)!
* In case of inclement weather, stargazing will be substituted with A Night of Astronomy in a Mammoth Hotel conference room. A presentation will be given by the astronomer including western and native mythology, a look at tonight’s night sky, upcoming astronomical events, getting hands-on with real space rocks, and more!
Arrive between 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm for your overnight stay at Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel. This evening, you will dine at the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel Dining Room at your leisure, reservations are not required. You will be given a time this evening to meet your Adventure Guide and fellow participants for a package orientation and Q&A session in the hotel.
Dawn is really the best time to search out the wild things, so we’ll leave the Mammoth area bright and early and head for Lamar Valley. Here, expansive views provide great opportunities to find spectacular megafauna grazing or hunting on the open hillsides, and your driver/guide will know where the action has been lately (as we’re looking for genuinely wild animals, there are no guarantees of course!). Our bus will be provisioned with muffins and juice for all aboard. For your best chance to catch a glimpse of these majestic creatures, it’s time to Wake Up to Wildlife!
You’ll arrive back at Mammoth Hotel in time to have lunch in the Dining Room, explore the Terraces, or simply take a walk around the historic Fort Yellowstone. The time is yours to explore the Mammoth Hot Springs area of Yellowstone.
After an early dinner, we’ll depart Mammoth for the Forces of the Northern Range Trailhead parking area for an expansive and dark-sky view of Yellowstone’s sky. You’ll be welcomed by hot chocolate and (hopefully) a clear sky to enjoy all the wonder and enjoy 2–3 hours of stargazing at the Forces of the Northern Range Trailhead. Guests will be shuttled to the stargazing location by Xanterra buses.
*A Night of Astronomy slideshow presentation in case of inclement weather
*Dress warmly and weather-appropriate for a night outside
This is a great opportunity to do a self-guided tour of Yellowstone! Whether it’s a walking tour of Mammoth Hot Springs’ Terraces, Fort Yellowstone, or one of the local hikes, it’s up to you. Or you can venture back to Lamar Valley, Cooke City, or choose your own adventure in Yellowstone.
After an early dinner in the Mammoth Hotel Dining Room, we’ll gather again for a second night of stargazing, stories, and stellar exploration, leaving via shuttle to our stargazing spot.

You will return to Mammoth Hot Springs in time to check out and start your next personal adventure.
